Nail Bending – Ironmind Red Nail

Many people ask why we bend perfectly good nails and other short steel.  More people have asked why we have this business.  Recently I made a trip to Halifax and managed to hand deliver an order to a customer in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia.  I was kind enough to give Darryl a free set of Ironmind Hand pads and he sent me this picture the next day along with this text “had leftover from my homemade loading pin.Bend a Bolt  Holy S*#1& that was hard”.  Hopefully Darryl will be purchasing some Ironmind Red Nails soon.

There is no way to describe the feeling of moving something that does not want to move.  I bent my first nail over 3 years ago with my cousin Rob.  That nail sits on my desk today.  It reminds me that if you believe you can do it, you can.  It took me nearly 5 minutes to bend that first nail.  Rob kept telling me just push your pinkies together.

Who would have thought that another visit to Rob’s house would introduce me to the world of Captains of Crush hand grippers and then a side business.

Anyway the reason we are here is passion for our products and wanting people to do things they did not think they were capable of.  Rob recently bent 5 Ironmind red nails in 3 mins.  Here is a video:

Happy bending and crushing!

Canadian National Grip Sport Champion

Canadian Grip Champ 93+Congratulations to Rob McMurren: Canada’s National Grip Sport Champion in the 93+ kg class.  Rob recently competed in Ottawa and took home the hardware.

Rob will represent Canada in the 93+ kg class at the 2015 North American Grip Sport Nationals on June 6th, 2015 in Wooster, OH.

Rob competed in the following events:

One Hand Pinch Lift:

The width of the pinch apparatus is adjustable to suit different hand sizes, but to keep it within the spirit of a pinch lift the minimum width allowed is the 2 outer steel discs and 2 rubber spacer discs, a width of 24mm. Before the event starts, you are given the opportunity to try it and find your best width. The smooth-sided, adjustable-width disc is held on a 2” thick metal rod by a pair of collars. Extra weights will be added to the outsides. The top of this is grasped with an overhand pinch grip and lifted until the end of the bar touches a horizontal bar placed at 16.5”, measured from the underside of the bar to the floor. There is no referee’s signal. You do not have to be erect upon completion. You must lower the weight under control. If the outer discs accidentally touch the bar before the bar itself, referee’s discretion will be used to judge whether the correct height was attained. Pinch gripping the discs using an unorthodox underhand grip will not be allowed. The free hand may NOT be used to brace against the opposing leg.

Rolling Thunder:

The lifter grabs the Rolling Thunder handle in approximately its center and lifts with the handle remaining approximately parallel to the ground. A thumbless grip is not permitted.

Any contact between the lifter’s hand and the non-revolving portion of the handle disqualifies the lift; and other than incidental contact, the hand or Rolling Thunder handle must not touch the body before the lift is completed—dragging the hand or handle up the leg is cause for an immediate “No lift.”

The lifter must fully straighten up (back erect, legs and hips locked out); once standing straight, the lifter must maintain control of the lift for 1 second before getting a down signal from the referee, and must then return the weight to the ground. Contact must be maintained between the lifter’s hand and the handle until the weight is resting on the floor. The referee then indicates whether the lift was passed or not.

2” v-bar:

The lifter grips the top of the vertical bar with one hand. The off-hand may not be placed in contact during any part of the attempt. The lifter must pull the vertical bar at least 2 inches off the ground and then return the vertical bar to the floor under control. If the vertical bar is not lifted 2 inches or if the vertical bar slips out of the lifter’s grip, the attempt is failed.

Silver Bullet:

The CoC Silver Bullet (with a 5-lb weight plate strapped to it) is inserted between the handles of a Captains of Crush gripper by the competitor no deeper than up to the top edge of the clear band, so that the script Captains of Crush is legible, and so that all four fingers are in contact with the CoC gripper handle (dropping the pinky completely off the end of the gripper handle is expressly prohibited).

Using one or two hands, the competitor closes the CoC No. 3 in his own time so that the two handles hold the CoC Silver Bullet in place and once this position has been achieved, and only one hand is holding the gripper shut, the referee gives the signal to start the clock.

The hand must be held with the gripper approximately vertical.

Time stops when the Silver Bullet drops from the handles or when the referee observes any opening of the gripper handle for any reason whatsoever.

Medley:

Competitors each have three minutes to complete as many feats as possible. All feats are to be completed using one hand; however competitors may switch hands whenever, and as often as they wish.

Expand Your Hand Bands

Expand Your Hand Bands from Ironmind are now available for purchase in Canada.

http://www.gripnbend.ca/product/expand-your-hand-bands/

When we were asked to bring the Expand Your Hand Bands product in I was reluctant as it seemed expensive for rubber-bands.  I decided to bring some in and try them out.  At the recommendation of Rob I have recently started deadlifting to help with crushing and bending.  I finished a cycle of normal deadlifts with no issues.  Rob put me onto snatch grip for the cycle I am on right now.  My right elbow has not liked this new hold and was providing a nice reminder of a constant ache.

After two workouts on Expand Your Hand Bands the elbow pain is gone!  I work up the three sets starting at the easiest band (white).  Note I am using the recommended workout of 3 sets of 12 on the bands.  The photo is me working my favorite colour.  I can complete a full range of motion on the yellow with a nice stretch feeling through the forearms.

I am really impressed with this product and now keep a set on my desk at work and a set in my workout area. This was easy to do as two sets of bands come in each package.

Happy crushing and bending!

The Two-Finger Utility Gripper.

With IMTUG, you train one or two fingers at a time. By training your pinch grip, you make sure that your thumb is working in powerful opposition to your digits for maximum holding strength and control.

You can target each finger individually to make it a worthy component of your total hand strength. As you strengthen your fingers, you improve the overall health and condition of your hand, increasing muscle balance, range of motion, and flexibility.

New PRs, healthier hands, better performance in your chosen sports, it’s the very thing that will give your grip strength and hand health training a much needed breath of fresh air.

Here are some training tips:

Not a conventional

You can train one or two fingers at a time, although we generally recommend training your ring finger and pinkie together, not your pinkie alone.

The Brush Technique
The hemi-end handle allows you to use a potent training technique called the brush: get an assist from an extra finger by lightly brushing across the tip of the handle. The idea is to get just enough added juice to complete your crush. You can now hold the closed position, slowly let the IMTUG open up, or just release and repeat. Whichever style you prefer, the brush technique will have the same result: it will make you stronger.

Customer Service: Communicate, Define, Perform, Verify

Today I experienced exceptional customer service.  My home builder sent Stucco Man Mike Desrosiers to perform some touch ups on my house.

He took the time to:

  • Introduce himself
  • Walk around my house with me to see areas requiring repair
  • Perform the work properly
  • Clean up after done
  • Knock on my door and walk around with me to show the work performed

I thanked him for ensuring I was happy before leaving and for cleaning up.  He then returned with a CD that he recorded with his daughter and handed it to me and said you might like this and walked away.

Customer service is that simple.  Communicate, confirm scope of work, perform the work and verify the work is complete.  Mike did not have to leave me a CD but he chose to.  I am not sure if he liked my approach to interacting with him and thanking him or if this is his calling card.

If you need stucco repairs call Mike “Stucco Man” Desrosiers 204-233-7930

Customer Experience

Managing Growth

50 percent year over yearI recently visited a young business (less than 10 years old) that is experiencing on average 50% year over year growth.   The growth is so fast their new head office is already out of space!  Here are a few reasons why they continue to grow:

  1. Great leadership hiring great people
  2. Identification and correction of too much on one persons plate
  3. Investing in systems to reduce workloads and improve processes
  4. Providing superior customer service by offering solutions not products
  5. Diversification into multiple products and industries

I plan to write further blogs on each of the above.

One thing I noticed, is the company has found a way to keep the founders creative by reducing their workloads as the business grows.  I see too many companies where the founder tries to maintain all duties and responsibilities that they had when the founded the company and usually takes on more as time progresses.  This usually leads to burnt out leaders and upset customers.  As your business grows you want to keep the customers that were there with you when you started, as long as there is mutual benefit to the relationship.
